The new video platform TikTok is the latest platform to catch the eye of the younger generations. The app allows users to record short videos and share them with their friends. The app is run by a chinese company called ByteDance and has surpassed the downloads accumulated by Instagram this year with a whopping total of 1.5 billion downloads since it launched. The app came into fire after a clip went viral of a muslim teenager denouncing the concentrations camps in china of Uighur Muslims was deleted from the user that created banned from it for "terrorist messages" The banning of the user went viral on twitter where people denounced it claiming that China had basically managed to infiltrate out methods of communication by owning and operating platforms that have become popular in the western world.
Furthermore, the guardian reported that TikTok had internal documents that directed employees to ban LGTBQ content in conservative countries like Turkey and to delete any anti china messaging they encountered. TikTok confirmed that the documents were real but said they are no longer in use. The situation has escalated to a point that made The US Army and the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States investigate how much data china is getting out of the app and what they could be doing with it. Will China manage to police our speech by acquiring platforms that we utilize? Discuss with us in the comments or on our Instagram page.
